Have you noticed that every year your kid’s myopia increases? Every year you receive the sad news that your kid needs a stronger prescription, and that his/her glasses are going to be thicker than before. The continued worsening of distance vision comes from increasing myopia, referred as Progressive Myopia.
Progressive Myopia makes it more difficult to do even some of the simplest things without wearing a prescription. Watching TV, being able to identify who is the person that is coming towards you, etc. The dependency on the prescription increases dramatically and, with this, comes the feeling of being “handicapped” or helpless when not wearing the glasses.
Progressive myopia is not a “benign inconvenience”, unfortunately myopia also brings increased risk for potentially blinding deseases, such as glaucoma by 4 times, cataracts by 5 times and retinal detachment by 16 times.
The good news is that myopia can be controlled medically using Orthokeratology “retainer contact lenses”. The therapy uses digitally designed rigid contact lenses to effectively slowing or halting myopic progression while the patient sleeps. ORTHO-K provides normal clear vision for kids, all day long. The lenses are made of a rigid, oxygen permeable material which has many benefits above and beyond spectacles.
If you are interested in the possibility of halting and stabilizing your kid’s advancing myopia, you should consider ORTHO-K Therapy. Join the many parents who have been absolutely amazed at how well their children have done in contact lenses for sleeping.
Can you imagine the happiness of waking up one morning and not needing to wear glasses, or contacts for the rest of your day? Improve your vision while you sleep, safe and without the risks of refractive surgery with Orthokeratology.
Ortho-K is the medical, non-surgical alternative to refractive surgery. It uses digitally custom designed contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea, while you sleep, and reduce or eliminate myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. The procedure is safe and reversible, if you should wish to go back to your glasses. Ortho-K has been shown effective at both addressing progressive myopia in kids and active lifestyles in adults; but children make ideal candidates.
The Cornea is highly elastic, however, it returns to its original shape. For this reason, the digital contacts or “retainer lenses” are worn typically at night during sleep. Retainer lenses are prescribed after the ideal corneal shape or maximum change has been achieved.
Advantages over refractive surgery:
The first step is a comprehensive eye exam; a topography and tomography are done. If you are good candidate, Dr. Whatts will design your personalized contact lens retainers. These will be manufactured and shipped to our office for your next fitting session.
Typically, in your next fitting session the lenses will be tried on you to ensure a perfect fit has been attained. That night, you will put the lenses on, prior to sleep and wear them throughout the night. The next morning, upon awakening, you will take the lenses off and notice the quality of vision is improved compared to the previous day. Each day thereafter, the vision will continue to sharpen, while maintaining sharp vision for more hours of the day.
Although the vision is excellent in a few days, the improved corneal shaping stabilizes at a slower pace over the next couple of months.
